Filmmaker Wes Anderson has brought his world of colour, symmetry, and old-school charm to Montblanc, designing a limited edition writing instrument that feels just as detailed as one of his film sets. The “Schreiberling” Limited Edition 1969 is a result of the filmmaker’s collaboration with the German maison, combining Montblanc’s historic archive with Mr. Anderson’s carefully constructed visual universe.
The pen, whose name translates to “scribbler,” is directly inspired by Montblanc’s “baby” pens—compact models from the 1910s and 1920s that were once among the smallest writing instruments ever produced. Mr. Anderson, known for favouring practical effects and in-camera storytelling over digital trickery, brings that same tactile approach to this collaboration.
This isn’t his first step into the Montblanc world. In 2024, Mr. Anderson directed 100 Years of Meisterstück, a short film created to mark the anniversary of Montblanc’s most iconic pen. With a clear eye for visual storytelling, he introduced viewers to a reimagined Montblanc universe. It was in this film that the “Schreiberling” made its first appearance—hinted at but never fully revealed.
Now, the pen takes centre stage. The “Schreiberling” is finished in bright green and yellow lacquer, matched with platinum-coated fittings. The cap top features coral-coloured precious resin around the Montblanc emblem, mirroring the detail found on early Montblanc designs. The pen is limited to just 1,969 pieces—marking the year Mr. Anderson was born.
Each pen comes as part of a writing set that feels straight out of a Wes Anderson scene. The vintage-style green tin box with a coral-coloured lining is a direct reference to the tin toolboxes often used in his films. Inside, the fountain pen is joined by a notebook, ruler, and green ink cartridges—every element thought through, no detail overlooked.
