India-based fashion designer Urvashi Kaur dazzled on Day 2 of Lakme Fashion Week 2024, showcasing conscious luxury to a captivated audience. Celebrating 15 years in the industry, Ms. Kaur elevated her artistry to new heights in collaboration with FDCI. The event, titled ‘Voices of Urvashi Kaur,’ highlighted her brand’s commitment to inclusivity and creative innovation.
Ms. Kaur’s collection, reminiscent of her past transformative works, defied societal norms while championing authenticity and individuality. Models adorned in timeless ensembles graced the runway, embodying Ms. Kaur’s eco-conscious design philosophy. The show not only broke traditional fashion barriers but also emphasized sustainability, with the assortment crafted from recycled materials like tetra packs.
As the runway came alive with Ms. Kaur’s visionary creations, the audience was serenaded by the melodies of Martin Dubois’ African harp and handpan, creating a harmonious atmosphere. Another show stealer was her latest masterpiece, ‘Prana’. This collection is part of her ongoing ‘Renew’ project, where old meets new in a dazzling display of zero-waste, eco-design, and upcycling magic.
Each garment tells a story of rebirth, of breathing new life into old textiles, and of daring to challenge the norm. The collection boasted an array of distinguished muses including veteran actor Ratna Pathak Shah, renowned artist Santanu Hazarika, and talented actors such as Tillotama Shome, Rasika Duggal, Shweta Tripathi, and Mallika Dua.
Ms. Kaur explained, “We are thrilled to have commemorated this significant milestone with a showcase that celebrated innovation, incisive disruption, and the power of collective impact. This experience was a reflection of the past 15 years and a testament to our commitment to create safe spaces for individuals to express themselves authentically. Thus, our designs are ungendered, inclusive and timeless. We stand out from the noise of virality because we feel different. Raw and organic, we leave the rest to the imagination and eventually experience. With a more thoughtful, serious approach, our quiet voice speaks volumes in its own conceptually non-conformist, aspirational way. We seek to evoke and emote through our disarming approach, celebrating our traditional, cultural and ethnic legacies.”
The collection itself is bathed in vibrant shades and includes striped patterns and monochrome block details.
