Just last year, French cognac producer Camus Cognac unveiled its plan to construct a US$30 million whisky distillery in China. The innovative distillery, called Guqi, has now officially begun whisky production at its cutting-edge facility in Bozhou, Anhui Province. This groundbreaking collaboration between French cognac producer Camus and Chinese baijiu giant Gujinggong represents a pioneering joint venture.
As promised, the distillery embodies a revolutionary blend of Eastern and Western spirits craftsmanship, merging China’s ancient baijiu fermentation methods with France’s expertise in intricate distillation and blending, alongside Scotland’s renowned skill in oak maturation. This innovative approach produces exceptional whiskies with unparalleled aromatic complexity and depth, thoughtfully designed to harmonize with Chinese cuisine and cater to local palates.

Bozhou’s distinctive terroir positions Guqi Distillery as a game-changer in whisky production. Known for its prized “无极水” (Limitless Water), a naturally alkaline, mineral-rich water source historically celebrated in spirit-making, the region offers unparalleled advantages. Bozhou’s dramatic seasonal climate further enhances the maturation process, accelerating the development of complexity and depth in the whisky.
Leveraging this exceptional location and pioneering production techniques, Guqi is set to craft rich, multi-layered whiskies. By blending traditional Chinese aromatics with the sophistication of single malt whisky, the distillery aims to deliver a groundbreaking spirit that redefines global whisky standards.
“At Guqi, we believe that greatness comes from drawing inspiration across time and cultures. Through the combination of ancient Chinese wisdom and modern Western techniques, we are reimagining what is possible in whisky,” Ryan Camus, General Manager of Guqi Distillery shared.
The distillery will introduce two distinctive product lines: premium single malt whiskies known for their uniquely intense aromatic profiles; and herbal whiskies infused with traditional Chinese herbs.
For enthusiasts looking to join this innovative journey, Guqi will launch its exclusive Secret Cask program in 2025. This invitation-only initiative offers a rare opportunity for a select group of collectors and connoisseurs to own private casks, witnessing their whisky mature into an extraordinary masterpiece.
